For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. — Romans 8:14
In chapter 8 of Romans Paul writes these words in verse 4:“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” In the Greek, the verb is reversed so it reads, “For as many as by the Spirit are being led, they are the sons of God.” This version puts the Holy Spirit at the front of the verse, and we are placed behind Him. The Greek word for “led” is the word ago, which simply means ‘to lead’. It was often used to portray an animal that was being led by a rope tied around its neck. Once tied to the rope, the animal willingly followed wherever their owner led them.*
I’ve found in my spiritual life that my willingness to be led is the key to living well. If we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us we are promised fruitful lives. The key to being willing to be led is trust. It’s not necessarily easy to trust that the right way especially when it feels unnatural for us, however we must believe that God is leading us into life even if we don’t want to go that way. As we submit to the process, He is faithful to us! Remember, Jesus called the Holy Spirit the “Spirit of Truth” (John 16:13) to help us understand that He can be trusted. We are promised to reap a good harvest if we sow good seeds. We cannot see the future, but He can. We do not always know what to do, but He does. He gets the Heavenly perspective of seeing us from beginning to end. Knowing that He sees it all helps us trust and allows us to lean back into the arms of our Father to be led.
